چکیده

Retained surgical sponges, so called textilomas, are rare complications after abdominal surgeries. The estimated incidence is approximately 1 per 1,000-1,500 surgical operations. However the true incidence is difficult to determine mainly because of underreporting due to medical legal issues. In a retroperitoneal location these textilomas represent less than 17% of abdominal locations and reports of renal or perirenal textilomas are scarce. The pre-operative diagnosis is difficult because they mimic tumors, abscesses, pseudo-cysts or hematomas. Clinical manifestations may occur early or late after surgery, depending on the type of inflammatory reaction induced . Radiology may contribute to the pre-operative diagnosis, especially when a radio-opaque marker is obvious, whereupon, conventional radiography may then allow for an accurate diagnosis. Otherwise, certain characteristic signs may be sought with ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) . We describe a case of surgical gauze retained in the renal pelvis after an open renal surgery presenting as a renal calculus.

Comparison of Diagnostic Value of Intrarenal Doppler Indices and Microalbuminuria for Detection of Diabetic Nephropathy in Type II Diabetic Patients

Background & Aims: Diabetes is the most common cause of renal insufficiency throughout the world. The main cause of renal failure in diabetic patients is microvascular endothelial injuries that is secondary to atherosclerosis and ischemia. The efficacy of renal Doppler indices such as resistive index (RI) and pulsetile index (PI) for the evaluation of intrarenal arteries has been shown. This st...

Metastasis from renal cell carcinoma presenting as osteolysis in total hip arthroplasty: a case report.

We report a case of a pelvic metastasis from a renal carcinoma in association with a total hip arthroplasty. Mistakenly diagnosing such lesion as a granulomatous osteolytic foreign body reaction due to polyethylene debris may lead to devastating and uncontrollable haemorrhage during revision arthroplasty.

Renal failure with a large bladder calculus related to a foreign body: a case report

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE We encountered a patient with renal failure in the setting of long-standing difficulty urinating, which he previously treated with intermittent self-catheterizations. Imaging showed a large urinary calculus in the bladder. This case illustrates the importance of taking a detailed history and the dramatic long-term effects of bladder calculi.
